Self Help Groups (SHGs) and MFI Group Lending

I'm looking for information about forming and experiences with Self Help Groups (SHGs) in developing countries -- specifically but not limited to Africa. Looking to compare SHGs with solidarity group lending practices within formal MFIs.

Are SHGs the same as CIGs Common Interest Groups? If so can provide some lessons learned.
