What would you like other microfinance-interested people to know about you?
I have worked with microfinance institutions in the U.S., Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe since 1979. Since 1985, I've been consulting with microfinance institutions in the areas of grassroots development, training trainers, strategic planning, curriculum development and community development. I founded Fabric of Life Foundation as a result of the poverty I've seen. Our primary project is in Mali, West Africa and we help economically inactive young women go from begging to businesswomen in 18 months. We set up a training center to help teach savings and business skills (dying weaving, beading, sewing). Students learn AIDS prevention, family planning and literacy. They can join the cooperative or start their own business. Most stay with the center forming economic activity groups. They have an online catalog where you can order directly from them. We have graduated 10 girls, now have another 15 students in Phase II. All funding comes from private donations.
