What would you like other microfinance-interested people to know about you?
My professional background is teaching high school students and their teachers about technology and project management. The action research for my Master’s in educational technology focused on social networks and learning together online. On another site, I am developing a web network to highlight people in nonprofit groups who will share their stories, link back to their own sites, and become a resource for students seeking service learning and project opportunities.

In a few words, please describe your interest in microfinance.
I approach microfinance as a sociologist, educator, and technology steward and communitarian. Microfinance is just part of the larger picture of empowering development strategies. I am interested in how all of these efforts to improve humanity are helped or hindered by our tools and habits of communication.

I've been functioning as the secretary for the Pacific Northwest chapter of Women Advancing Microfinance to learn more about building community, managing association, and the myriad ways women are creating opportunities in the microfinance industry.

What microfinance issues would you like to learn more about?
It is fascinating to learn about different models of economic development and the role microfinance plays. How does applying for, making use of and paying back a small loan affect first one person, then the community they're a part of? Does it really just take one small loan one time to effect a transformation? What other supports are essential? What features of microloans create sustainabie culture in a community, and what is less successful?
Do you live in the Puget Sound region?
yes
Have you attended a WAM meeting?
yes

The Purpose and Profitability of Microfinance

I downloaded this lecture of Vikram Akula - Founder and CEO, SKS Microfinance in India from Uchannel. Need to listen next week when I'm jogging. “This is what we do,” Akula said. “We provide women with resources to become economically self-reliant. We have proven that microfinance works to get people out of po

Hi Sue, Remember when we met in DC? Yes, I helped found WAM Northern California which is active and strong. WAM just launched new chapters in Chicago and the Middle East. Would love to connect with you about commucations strategies for WAM International. I really love this site and options.
Thanks,
Kelly

Hi Sue,

I'm flexible on the format for the book discussion. If in person, I would think every 3 weeks or so would work best (though I will be away the middle two weeks of June). I live in Fremont, so North Seattle works best for me.

Thanks,
Amanda

I found your organization simply by searching under Microfinance. I am particularly interested in Kazakhstan as I have 4 year old daughter (pictured) adopted from there.

Aside from my business as a high tech recruiter in Silicon Valley, I have a major gifts fundraising background and am an advisor for Pulsewire.net. I am actively researching the Microfinance sector and Microfinance initiatives in Kazakhstan.

Thanks for connecting.

Not sure best way to post this but here are some suggested books to read that could get the book thing started:
The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid: Eradicating Poverty Through Profits
C.K. Prahalad. Published by Wharton School Publishing/Pearson (2004).

Banker to the Poor
Muhammad Yunus. Published by Public Affairs (1999).

Also there is the book from the speaker we highlighted in one of the first meetings.

Ok - thanks for your input on the link. I'm still getting used to the Ning and I'll have more time to explore this afternoon/evening. I'll let you know on posting in other places later.
