Inspired by the Village Phone Ladies in Bangladesh, Grameen Foundation has replicated Village Phone in several sub-Saharan African countries as well as Southeast Asia. Microfinance clients take out a loan for a phone kit that works at the outer limits of the existing network and become the payphone for their village. Among some of the benefits are farmers who are know able to skip the middleman and earn higher prices for commodities.
